Direct Drive Starts Today!

dd2016-1Direct Drive is the name for B.F. Day PTSA’s biggest fundraiser, which runs for two short weeks this year from November 7-18.  We don’t ask you to sell wrapping paper or cookie dough – we make a big ask just once a year, and B.F. Day families always respond. This year, we are working to raise more than $46,000 or programs and services that benefit all B.F. Day kids.

This week, every B.F. Day student will bring home a gold envelope in their folders with a pledge card and information about how to participate (and donate if you can). Fill in your pledge card and return it to the school by the 18th. Please see the FAQ below for more information about Direct Drive.

In a nutshell, you can contribute by

  • Writing a check, payable to B.F. Day PTSA
  • Donating online
  • Having your company match your gift
  • Returning your pledge card – even if you aren’t able to donate – to be eligible to win prizes
  • And, thanks to the generosity of B.F. Day parents, for every pledge card returned by the deadline, $5 will be automatically donated to B.F. Day PTSA!  Turn it in!

Q. How does Direct Drive work?
A. This week, every student will receive a Gold envelope in his or her classroom folder. This envelope contains information about the Direct Drive campaign, as well as a pledge card.   Parents complete the pledge card, and return them to the classroom between November 9 and Friday, November 18. Donations can be paid all at once by check or credit card/PayPal (online at www.bfdayptsa.org), or you can indicate a date in the future when you plan to donate. Contributions are 100% tax-deductible, and can be matched by many companies in the Seattle area. Our goal is to have 100% of the cards returned, whether or not you donate.

Q. How will my donation be used?
The District and the State do not provide full funding for things B.F. Day parents have said they care about, like music, technology, curriculum enhancement, community events and classroom supplies. The PTSA budget for 2016-17 is $80,000. Most of these funds were earmarked for those “extra” programs and services that directly benefit our children in the classroom. Here’s where the program-specific funds go:

Q. How much should I give?
A. If you are able to give, we ask that you consider making a gift that is meaningful to you and your family. We suggest $250, recognizing that some families will contribute more and some are unable to contribute at this time. All money donated helps ensure that quality instruction and enrichment opportunities will continue throughout the school year at B.F. Day.

Q. What can I get just for returning my pledge card?
A. We want to make this kind of fun, so there are a couple other benefits you’ll get if you turn in your pledge card:

  1. Every pledge card returned will be entered into a raffle to win one of three $25 gift cards for Top Ten Toys.
  2. Thanks to the generosity of two B.F. Day families, for every pledge card received, $5 will be contributed to the PTSA. Even if you can’t contribute, you’ll be supporting B.F. Day just by returning your card.  How can you pass this up!

Q. Can I write a check? Who do I make my check out to?
A. Yes! Make your check payable to B.F. Day PTSA, include it in your gold envelope with your completed pledge card, and return it to your classroom using your child’s folder.  Or, drop it in the PTSA mailbox in the B.F. Day office. You can also mail it to:

Q. Can I donate online?
A. Yes. Click on the “Donate” button on our web site (bfdayptsa.org). Our PayPal system will accept all major credit cards, or you can use your PayPal account if you have one.

Q. My company will match my gift. What do I need to do?
A. Terrific! Many Seattle area companies – Tableau, Microsoft, Adobe, Boeing, Google, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and others – match employee donations, and we’re already set up to receive matches in their systems. Be sure to indicate on the pledge card that your company matches, and make sure you apply for those funds.  If we’re not listed in your company’s matching system, let us know and we can help.  In general, here’s the information you need to provide them:

A. All donations will be handled by the Fundraising Chair (Steve Albertson) in coordination with the PTSA treasurer (Rosie Donovan). Donations online are processed using a secure server hosted by PayPal, a well-known online payment system.

Q. Is this the only B.F. Day PTSA fundraiser?
A. No, but it’s our biggest. We have several Easy Everyday Fundraising options that you can take advantage of all year.  In the spring, we will have our annual Walk N Roll event. And depending on the success of Direct Drive, we may also have an event in the spring to raise additional funds or just have a parent party.

YOGA
Grades K-2 Mondays; 2:50-3:50 Music Room
 
Let’s get bendy, go upside down and engage the natural enthusiasm of kids in this energy releasing yoga class. Classes aim to enhance your child’s body awareness, balance and coordination, as well as build strength. Mind-body activities help children develop sensory integration skills, self-awareness and self-esteem.  Breathing techniques are incorporated that help children self-soothe and regulate their minds. We’ll play games, and take fabulous yoga adventures to Amazon rainforests, Arabian deserts, and outer space. Self-expression is highly encouraged and laughter guaranteed as kids build strength, increase flexibility, and focus and concentrate.  Max 12 students. www.fueledbyyoga.com

SEWING

Do you have a young sewist at home bugging you to teach them how to sew? Join our after school sewing program and not only will they learn the basics of machine sewing, but also how sewing can be a wonderful expression of their creative mind! Each session we will make everything from designing and creating a monster to zipper pouches, pillows, PJ bottoms, and messenger bags…the list of sewing fun goes on and on! No experience is necessary and all supplies are provided.

THE DRAMA CLUB

‘Save the drama for this Mama!!
Julie Bragg (aka Katie’s Mom) is offering a new drama program for BF Day. 
The Club will be a fun mix of Improv, Creative Visualization, Basic Theater Styles, Character Creation and Development and Scene work.  Each class will create an original Theatrical Piece to be presented to friends and family at the end of each session. It’s going to be a great time for all!!

Before School CHORUS
Grades 3-5, Wednesdays 7:35-8:30am Music Room
 
The BF Day chorus will continue this year with Laura Ouimette.  The morning class will have no cost thanks to a grant from the Music in Schools Chorus Program.  Class size is limited to 35 students, to be coordinated with the parent contact and teacher.  Students should plan to attend each session and will be dismissed from the class at 8:30am to line up with their homeroom on the playground.  Class continues for full school year.

WORLD MUSIC by Mr. Ryan
Grades K-2, Wednesdays 2:50-3:50 Music Room
 
This class will focus on music, instruments, and songs from around the world. Each lesson will have elements of dance and basic music theory. The children will be exposed to an array of musical genres and instrumentation. Through music, students will focus on various cultural similarities and differences. As a final project, the children will create their very own country with specific music and traditions.

CREATIVE CODING
Grades 3-5, Wednesdays 2:50-3:50 Computer Lab
 
Creative Coding teaches your child the joy of computer programming by helping them write their own custom computer games and animations!  Beginner students will learn the fundamental elements of coding using MIT’s Scratch to create their very own computer game. Advanced coders (students with previous Scratch experience) will use a mix of coding challenges techniques, and hacks.  Kids increase their coding skills, speed and proficiency. Through the “brain exercise” of coding, coders build intelligence like athletes build muscles. They develop stronger problem solving skills, confidence over technology, and emotional persistence. http://www.creativecoding4kids.com. Max 12 students.

PARKOUR
Grades 3-5, Wednesdays 2:50-3:50 Outdoors
 
Parkour Visions after-school classes cover the core movements of parkour, as well as the philosophy and mindset behind safe, responsible training. Attendees will practice jumping, landing, vaulting, balancing, swinging, and climbing. The program time is split between instruction, games, and supervised free play. By the end of the series, participants will have the knowledge and skills they need to practice basic parkour on their own.  Class cancelled for Thunderstorms only! http://parkourvisions.org

Children experience a variety of music and dance styles that include African dance, Hip Hop, Hula, Bollywood, Samba, Greek Folk and more.  Elements of Creative Dance and Movement are combined with cultural dances in each class. Through developing and strengthening movement skills, children build a foundation for their own expression of dance.  Stories, books, photos, songs, instruments and costume related to the cultural dances are part of the children’s cultural experience. World Dance aims to broaden children’s awareness of their global community. http://worlddancewithmarissa.weebly.com/

Spring Enrichment Class Enrollment (now!)

Enrollment for Spring after-school enrichment classes is happening now!  Below is all the information you need to sign up.  Please note:  Creative Coding for Kids and Little Wings are full.

Soccer:
Join us at BF Day Elementary for After School Soccer. Skilled and experienced instructors will conduct an exciting one hour session each week right after school.  We will learn basic fundamentals, rules and strategies of the beautiful game, and have fun scrimmaging while focusing on teamwork, sportsmanship, and FUN! 2nd – 3rd Grade: Tuesdays 2:50-4:00March 24 – May 26 K – 1st Grade: Thursdays 2:50-4:00March 26 – May 28 Cost: $110 Registration is online.  To register, please go to:

Tennis:
TGA brings the tennis court to you, making it convenient and affordable to learn and play in a fun and safe environment.  Kid-friendly instructors help students develop tennis skills and knowledge, while using the sport to teach valuable life lessons like honesty and sportsmanship.  Sign up today to experience all the fun and excitement of tennis class with TGA!

Crazy Cakes:
Crazy Cakes is beginning a new session on Thursday, March 19.  Who doesn’t love playing with frosting and bringing home a small cake as well?  All grade levels welcome!  The cost for this 8-week series is $120.  To sign up, fill out the attached sheet and bring it into the main office at school with a check made out to BF Day PTSA.

 

 

Little Wednesday Classes (March 25)

Little Wednesday activities are scheduled for March 25, which is an early-release day.  Come join us for one of our fun classes:

1. Recycled Robots with Kids Create!
Come join us for an afternoon of ultimate scrounge art, as we use metal scraps, tin cans, broken toys, wires and other amazing junk to create ROBOTS!  Students will use duct tape, wire, and assisted hot glue to engineer an amazing robotic sculpture.  Sign up quickly, this one’s always a big hit!  Open to all grades. This will be held in the art room.  Class is $22.  Sign up online at www.kidscreate.org

2.  Lego building with Fun Assembly Required!
Come join Fun Assembly Required for a Medieval LEGO building adventure.  Kids will learn to construct cool castles and will also learn techniques for building trees, rocks, water and other landscaping features to add detail to their creations.   Open to all grades.
This will be held in the gym.  Class is $25.  To sign up, fill out and return the attached form to the main office, with a check made out to BFDay PTSA.

3.  World Dance with Marissa Baratian!
Join World Dance with Marissa for an African dance and culture experience filled with traditional Guinean rhythms and dance, West African drums and fabrics, cultural stories and a craft project. World Dance with Marissa combines creative movement and cultural dances from around the world, broadening children’s awareness of their global community. In addition, World Dance gives back a percentage of profits to Guinea Kids Education Fund to support school children in West Africa.   • B.F. Day’s music curriculum
  • Keeping every computer in the building up and running,
  • Providing teachers with money to buy classroom supplies and other support

It also funds literacy enrichment, Field Day, Math Night, and those great Pacific Science Center workshops.

Without these fundraising dollars, these programs would not exist for your kids!

January Little Wednesday and After-School Clubs

Welcome back and Happy New Year!  January has a lot in store for the kids at BF Day, beginning next week.

Next Wednesday, January 15th is a Little Wednesday and as always, there are some amazing workshops offered.  This month there is Chihuly-inspired Shrinky Dink Sculpture, Sewing, and Engineering with LEGO! Math in Winter

Thank you to all who came out to Math Night! Thanks to teachers who ran the games, to Beth Tesh for event organization and ice cream, and to Principal Pearl for hosting.

Springtime Volunteer Opportunities

volunteersJoe Olegario, Parent Volunteer Coordinator, would like to share the following events and volunteering opportunities for this Spring:

1. Carol Magallanes is looking for 4 volunteers for the upcoming Little Wednesday, May 15th, 1:00-3:00. She is looking for 2 volunteers for the Pokémon workshop, and another 2 volunteers for the Paper Airplane Derby.

2. Mr. D is looking for some volunteers to help out with a Bicycling Unit he is doing with the 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders, May 1-3 and May 6-10. You can contact him directly at  vldelaney@seattleschools.org to let him know you are interested and to find out specific times that volunteers are needed during the day.

3. Teacher Appreciation Week is May 6th-10th, and we are hoping to leave some fresh baked goods, snacks, and drinks every morning that week in the teacher’s lounge. If you are interested in dropping off some sort of treat for the staff at B.F. Day that week, please let me know. Drop-off would be around 8:30, before the school day begins. If you have already expressed interest, I have your contact information, and I will be sending out an email with the specifics next week.

Spring Session of After School Music with Miss Sandy

The Spring session of After School Music with Miss Sandy is beginning soon!

New dates are: Wednesdays (except little Wednesday, which is May 15)  April 24, May 1, 8, 22, 29.

Cost $50, payable to B.F. Day PTSA.  Scholarship requests,  payment arrangements and payments are to be made by the second class, May 1st and should be coordinated with Miss Sandy directly.  Minimum of  8– First come first served.   Fee includes materials and a small snack.  Extra-hungry kids and those with dietary restrictions are welcome to bring extra snack.  3:15-4:15 in the music room.    Mini concert on the last day of class in the music room at 4:00. musicnote
