Direct Drive Starts Today!

dd2016-1Direct Drive is the name for B.F. Day PTSA’s biggest fundraiser, which runs for two short weeks this year from November 7-18.  We don’t ask you to sell wrapping paper or cookie dough – we make a big ask just once a year, and B.F. Day families always respond. This year, we are working to raise more than $46,000 or programs and services that benefit all B.F. Day kids.

This week, every B.F. Day student will bring home a gold envelope in their folders with a pledge card and information about how to participate (and donate if you can). Fill in your pledge card and return it to the school by the 18th. Please see the FAQ below for more information about Direct Drive.

In a nutshell, you can contribute by

  • Writing a check, payable to B.F. Day PTSA
  • Donating online
  • Having your company match your gift
  • Returning your pledge card – even if you aren’t able to donate – to be eligible to win prizes
  • And, thanks to the generosity of B.F. Day parents, for every pledge card returned by the deadline, $5 will be automatically donated to B.F. Day PTSA!  Turn it in!

All donations are tax-deductible. And greatly appreciated.

Thank you B.F. Day Families!

Q. How does Direct Drive work?
A. This week, every student will receive a Gold envelope in his or her classroom folder. This envelope contains information about the Direct Drive campaign, as well as a pledge card.   Parents complete the pledge card, and return them to the classroom between November 9 and Friday, November 18. Donations can be paid all at once by check or credit card/PayPal (online at www.bfdayptsa.org), or you can indicate a date in the future when you plan to donate. Contributions are 100% tax-deductible, and can be matched by many companies in the Seattle area. Our goal is to have 100% of the cards returned, whether or not you donate.

Q. How will my donation be used?
The District and the State do not provide full funding for things B.F. Day parents have said they care about, like music, technology, curriculum enhancement, community events and classroom supplies. The PTSA budget for 2016-17 is $80,000. Most of these funds were earmarked for those “extra” programs and services that directly benefit our children in the classroom. Here’s where the program-specific funds go:

expense_chartArts
: Music/Performing Arts teacher, tile project
Literacy: Writers in the Schools, Library grant
Teacher Grants: School supplies & class needs
Gen’l Enrichment: Field trips, technology, Green Team
Family Support: Scholarships & assistance
Volunteering: Coordinator stipend & supplies
All-School Events: Monthly events for families
top

Q. How much should I give?
A. If you are able to give, we ask that you consider making a gift that is meaningful to you and your family. We suggest $250, recognizing that some families will contribute more and some are unable to contribute at this time. All money donated helps ensure that quality instruction and enrichment opportunities will continue throughout the school year at B.F. Day.
top

Q. What can I get just for returning my pledge card?
A. We want to make this kind of fun, so there are a couple other benefits you’ll get if you turn in your pledge card:

  1. Every pledge card returned will be entered into a raffle to win one of three $25 gift cards for Top Ten Toys.
  2. Thanks to the generosity of two B.F. Day families, for every pledge card received, $5 will be contributed to the PTSA. Even if you can’t contribute, you’ll be supporting B.F. Day just by returning your card.  How can you pass this up!

Q. Can I write a check? Who do I make my check out to?
A. Yes! Make your check payable to B.F. Day PTSA, include it in your gold envelope with your completed pledge card, and return it to your classroom using your child’s folder.  Or, drop it in the PTSA mailbox in the B.F. Day office. You can also mail it to:

B.F. Day PTSA – Direct Drive
3921 Linden Ave N.
Seattle WA 98103
top

Q. Can I donate online?
A. Yes. Click on the “Donate” button on our web site (bfdayptsa.org). Our PayPal system will accept all major credit cards, or you can use your PayPal account if you have one.
top

Q. My company will match my gift. What do I need to do?
A. Terrific! Many Seattle area companies – Tableau, Microsoft, Adobe, Boeing, Google, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and others – match employee donations, and we’re already set up to receive matches in their systems. Be sure to indicate on the pledge card that your company matches, and make sure you apply for those funds.  If we’re not listed in your company’s matching system, let us know and we can help.  In general, here’s the information you need to provide them:

Q. Is my contribution tax deductible?  Will I receive a receipt?
A. Yes, your contribution is 100% tax deductible. You will receive a receipt by email in January 2017.
top

Q. How secure is the information I provide?
A. All donations will be handled by the Fundraising Chair (Steve Albertson) in coordination with the PTSA treasurer (Rosie Donovan). Donations online are processed using a secure server hosted by PayPal, a well-known online payment system.
top

Q. How do I make my donation at a future date, or in installments?A. Simply indicate this on the pledge card, and we’ll be in contact with you.
top

Q. Is this the only B.F. Day PTSA fundraiser?
A. No, but it’s our biggest. We have several Easy Everyday Fundraising options that you can take advantage of all year.  In the spring, we will have our annual Walk N Roll event. And depending on the success of Direct Drive, we may also have an event in the spring to raise additional funds or just have a parent party.
top

Q. Who should I contact with questions?
A. Steve  Albertson (fundraising@bfdayptsa.org) is the parent volunteer coordinating Direct Drive. You can also contact B.F. Day PTSA President Daniella Kim (president@bfdayptsa.org).

May 9: PTSA General Meeting

Monday, May 9 (6:30-8:00p in the Library) is the final general PTSA membership meeting of the year, and it’s an important one. PTSA members who attend will vote on the proposed budget and new board officers for next year, as well as a revision to the PTSA Standing Rules. Please attend if you can.

Budget
You’ll find the proposed budget here. This budget was drafted and discussed by the PTSA board, and incorporates input from Principal Jaskot and the teaching staff, as well as the data submitted by the membership in the survey sent out earlier this year. Items of note for your review:

  • We propose income (fundraising) of about the same amount as this year (nearly $80,000).
  • Proposed increase for an expanded music/performing arts program (more of what we did this year)
  • Expansion of the Writers in the Schools program to include all grades
  • Increase in funding for family support
  • Support for an all-school field trip to see Mr. D’s play next Spring!
Professional development funds for teacher training

Take a look! Only PTSA members can vote, but input from all parents is welcome.

Board Officers & Other Roles for Next Year

At the meeting, we’ll formally vote on the current slate of board officers. As is often the case at the May meeting, we don’t have every role filled yet, but will between now and the Fall. If you are interested in any of the open roles, please contact Steve Albertson.

  • President: Daniella Kim has graciously agreed to serve!
  • Vice President: Open. Assists President and performs President’s duties in President’s absence. Attends all board meetings, and participates in PTSA decision-making.
  • Treasurer: Rosie Donovan (2nd term!  Yay!)
  • Secretary: Open. Takes minutes and records all business transacted at each PTSA meeting (board and general membership) . Participate in board decision-making and other duties as assigned.

Other PTSA Roles: We are a community of “doers”, and there are lots of ways you can get involved in short-term roles or longer-term responsibilities. I guarantee you there is something you can do that is valuable and will work within your time constraints and interests. Here is a full list of roles you can choose from, and below are some that are either filled or for which we need more volunteers:

  • Fundraising: Steve Albertson (seeking help with Direct Drive in the Fall, Easy Everyday Fundraising and grant-writing)
  • Communications: Becky Smith (seeking tech-savvy help for web site, email newsletter and other systems)
  • Enrichment/After School Programs: Adrienne James (seeking other to help)
  • Advocacy/Legislative Chair:  Help organize parents to advocate for (or against) policy and District issues that affect us. This year, the PTSA has worked to prevent reductions in our enrollment boundaries, and fought against teacher reductions.
  • Membership Chair: Open. Collect PTSA membership forms (data entry), mostly during September/October.

Take a look at all the positions, and when you see one you’re interested, either contact the people already working in these roles or email Steve Albertson (PTSA board president). And come to the May 9 meeting to learn more! See you then.

Walk and Roll FAQ

The BF Day PTSA’s annual walk-a-thon, the Walk and Roll for Fitness

Thank you to those who are donating and who are volunteering for this fantastic fundraiser.  Stay tuned for more stats on how we did as a school.

Below is some information on what to do next….after Friday.

What should I do with the envelope? When should I turn it in?

Please turn in your envelope with all pledges by April 27. There will be a random drawing for prizes (for students) for all envelopes returned by April 27.

How will I know how many laps my child walked?

After spring break, each student will be sent home with a sheet of paper that notes how many laps they walked. If that paper gets lost, you can email Kristin (below) for that information.

Can I donate online?

YES, you can pay online. There is a pay pal button on the B.F. Day PTSA webpage – www.bfdayptsa.org – (look below) where you can make your donations. In the notes section, please note the name of the student (and Teacher, Room # and/or grade) associated with the pledge. Also, please note on the envelope that the donation has been made online.

What is our fundraising goal?

Our goal this year is to raise at least $16,900.

If we raise at least $14,000, Mr. Jaskot will dye his beard PINK!!!

Meeting on Boundary Change (April 4)

The Seattle School District is proposing a reduction in the enrollment boundary for B.F. Day, beginning in in Fall 2017. This change will remove appx. 45 square blocks from our enrollment boundary. Here’s a map showing the reduction from the current boundary, outlined in red:

BF Day Boundary Change

These boundary changes were approved by the Seattle School board in 2013. Seattle Public Schools is having a series of public meetings beginning this week to get feedback from the community about the specific changes. If you believe that B.F. Day is generally stronger with more kids, and that a boundary reduction doesn’t make sense, please come to the meeting and make your voice heard.  Most of the PTSA board members will be there.

The first meeting is Monday, April 4 from 6:30-7:30 at Ballard High School (1418 NW 65th Street).

A reduction in the boundary will mean fewer kids being assigned to B.F. Day as their neighborhood school. For our school, a reduction just doesn’t make sense: we have some space for more neighborhood kids, and when other nearby schools are adding portables to accommodate growth, it doesn’t make any sense to reduce our boundary. The District should be increasing our enrollment boundary to balance with neighboring schools, not reducing it. To date, no one at Seattle Schools has been able to tell us why the proposed change is being made.

If you plan to be at the meeting or want to be involved in stopping this reduction, please, email Steve Albertson (BF Day PTSA board president).  Thanks!
